De-mystifying the Dethatcher

A dethatcher, as it's name applies, is a machine, or tool designed to remove the dead layer of grass (or thatch) at the base of the grass plant. Small rotating tines cutting vertically into the turf, rip out the thatch, which can then be collected and removed.

Reduction of thatch aids in water and nutrient absorption by grass plants.Thatch removal also allows for better air circulation and reduction of disease and fungus problems. Thatch removal also reduces the brown, dead look to a thick lawn.

Note the dead/brown grass pulled up by this dethatcher!
